Mayor Jeff Griffiths and the Bishop City Council officially proclaimed October 24th as World Polio Day.  The United Nations and governments around the world are joining in making similar proclamations.

The Bishop Rotary Clubs have been the local voice creating awareness and educating the citizens of Bishop about the vital importance of eradicating polio worldwide. Rotary brings 105 years of history to this standard and helps with today's challenges including disease, illiteracy, poverty, lack of clean water and much more. The Bishop Sunrise Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Bishop are among 34,000 Rotary clubs located in more than 200 countries worldwide.

When Rotary and its partners began its mission to eradicate polio in 1985, more than 350,000 children were stricken with polio every year. Since then, polio cases have been reduced by 99% to fewer than 1,700 cases in 2009. Today only four countries –Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan –remain polio-endemic, and with some luck 2010 may be the first year ever to see fewer than 1,000 cases worldwide.

The Bishop Sunrise Rotary Club initiative is one more community effort to invite the citizens of Bishop to support Rotary's goal.

Tom Hardy, District Governor Nominee happily accepted this recognition.  "On behalf of the Bishop Rotary Clubs, we appreciate the support of the City of Bishop and its citizens, and we look forward to the day when we can say we have a polio free world."

In honor of World Polio Day, the Bishop Rotary Clubs are accepting donations to help finish the job of eradicating polio.  If you would like to contribute, you deliver a check payable to "The Rotary Foundation" to Tom Hardy, Hardy & Place, 106 South Main Street, Suite 201.  Be sure to write "Polio" in the memo line.  You will receive a receipt for tax purposes in the mail.  You can also go online to www.rotary.org and follow the "End Polio Now" link.  All funds donated will help to match a $355 million grant received by the Rotary Foundation from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and will help to End Polio Now.
